SAE J3400 Standardization
The North American Charging Standard (NACS), formally documented as SAE J3400, unifies AC and DC charging onto a single, compact pin geometry. By sharing the primary power pins for both single-phase AC and high-voltage DC delivery, the connector achieves a substantially smaller form factor than CCS1.
NACS Pin Architecture
Serves as Line 1 for AC charging or the positive high-voltage terminal during DC fast charging. Contactors within the vehicle switch the routing based on digital handshake.
Serves as Neutral for AC charging or the negative return terminal during DC fast charging. Sized to handle continuous 500A+ limits when liquid cooled.
Maintains compatibility with J1772 PWM signaling and ISO 15118 Power Line Communication (PLC) for Plug-and-Charge authentication.
Protective earth. Extended physical length ensures it makes contact first during insertion and breaks contact last upon removal, critical for chassis grounding.
